Formula
drive time = distance ÷ speed; total = drive time + breaks
Divide trip distance by average speed to get hours on the road, then add break minutes converted to hours for the total elapsed time.
Worked example
480 km at 80 km/h is 6 hours of driving. With 45 minutes of breaks, plan for 6 h 45 m door to door — not counting traffic slowdowns the average speed should already absorb.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Average speed must reflect traffic and stops at lights — not just the speed limit.
- Break time of zero gives pure drive time with no rest allowance.
- Distances over 50,000 km are blocked as a sanity cap, not a routing limit.
FAQ
- Lower your average speed. A 60 km/h effective average on a 100 km/h highway accounts for towns and slow lanes.
