What each Unit input means

Convert
What you are converting. The value and unit boxes change with it, and each kind keeps its own last entry, so switching from length to weight and back does not lose your number.
Value
For length, the number to convert, decimals allowed. For a height in feet and inches, enter decimal feet: 5 ft 9 in is 5.75 ft.
Value
For temperature, negative numbers are allowed, down to about absolute zero (−459.67 °F); every other kind starts at zero.
From
For fuel economy there is only a 'from' unit: the answer gives the figure in km/L, US mpg, UK mpg and L/100 km at once.

Unit conversion formula

result = value × (base units in one 'from' unit ÷ base units in one 'to' unit) · temperature: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15 · L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L

xto=xfrom×ffromftox_{\text{to}} = x_{\text{from}} \times \frac{f_{\text{from}}}{f_{\text{to}}}

Pick what you are converting and every unit of that kind is pinned to one base unit: metres for length, kilograms for weight, square metres for area, km/h for speed, pascals for pressure, watts for power and seconds for time. The factor between two units is the base amount in one 'from' unit divided by the base amount in one 'to' unit, so feet to metres is 0.3048 ÷ 1 and kilograms to pounds is 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.20462. Most of these factors are exact by definition — since 1959 the inch is 25.4 mm and the pound 0.45359237 kg, and the foot, yard, mile, ounce and stone follow from them. Two quantities are different. Temperature scales have different zero points as well as different degree sizes, so Celsius to Fahrenheit is a stretch and a shift (× 9/5, then + 32), not a single factor. Fuel economy runs both ways: miles per gallon and km per litre are distance per fuel, while litres per 100 km is fuel per distance, its reciprocal. The page shows the factor, the working and your value in every other unit of the same kind.

Unit conversion worked example

Choose Length, enter 5 and convert feet to metres: 5 × 0.3048 = 1.524 m, exactly, because the foot has been defined as 0.3048 m since 1959. The table under the answer gives the same 5 ft as 60 inches, 152.4 cm and 1.666667 yards. Going the other way, a height of 1.8 m is 1.8 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.906 ft, or 5 ft 10.9 in once the 0.906 ft is multiplied by 12.

More Unit examples

A 70 kg adult: 70 ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.323584 lb, which is 11 stone and 0.3 lb in the British style (154.32 ÷ 14).

The one temperature where the two scales agree: −40 °C × 9/5 = −72, plus 32 gives -40 °F.

A 100 km/h speed limit: 100 ÷ 1.609344 = 62.137119 mph.

A car tyre at 32 psi: 32 × 6,894.757 Pa = 220,632 Pa, which is 2.206322 bar or 220.6 kPa.

A car doing 30 US mpg: 30 × 1.609344 ÷ 3.785412 = 12.75 km/L, and 100 ÷ 12.75 = 7.84 L/100 km. In the UK the same car would be quoted at 36.03 mpg, because the British gallon is bigger.

Where the Unit converter can give the wrong answer

  • Area squares the length factor: a metre is 3.28 feet, so a square metre is 3.28 × 3.28 = 10.76 square feet, not 3.28. Choose Area rather than converting a length twice.
  • 'Ton' is ambiguous. The US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18 kg), the metric tonne 1,000 kg and the British long ton 2,240 lb; the weight list has the first two.
  • A temperature difference converts without the 32: a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F.
  • Tyre gauges read gauge pressure, above the surrounding air. This page converts units; it does not add the 14.7 psi of the atmosphere.
  • Horsepower comes in two sizes: US mechanical horsepower is 745.7 W and metric horsepower (PS) 735.5 W.
  • The time list has no month, because months run from 28 to 31 days, and its year is the 365.25-day average. For calendar dates use the date calculator.
  • Results show up to six decimal places; the factors themselves are exact or NIST's seven-figure values.
