Formula
total seconds = hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds
Each component must stay in range (minutes and seconds under 60). The calculator sums to total seconds, then derives decimal minutes, decimal hours, and a days-plus-hours breakdown for spans longer than 24 hours.
Worked example
1 hour 30 minutes is 5,400 seconds, 90.00 minutes, or 1.5 hours — the length of a standard feature film plus previews, or a long workout session.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Minutes and seconds must each be 0–59; enter 90 minutes as 1 hour 30 minutes instead — otherwise the calculator returns an error.
- Negative components aren't allowed; use separate fields for elapsed time, not signed offsets.
- Days in the output are whole days (floor of total hours ÷ 24); remaining hours are the integer remainder, not rounded.
FAQ
- Not in this calculator — use three number fields for hours, minutes, and seconds. That keeps parsing unambiguous (1:30 could mean 1 h 30 m or 1 m 30 s elsewhere).
