Formula
tip = bill × tip% / 100; total = bill + tip; per person = total ÷ split
Multiply the pre-tip bill by the tip percentage to get the gratuity, add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people if you're splitting evenly.
Worked example
A ₹1,200 bill with a 15% tip adds ₹180 in gratuity for a ₹1,380 total. Split between two people, each pays ₹690 — handy when the card terminal only shows the pre-tax subtotal.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Split count must be a whole number — you can't split a bill 2.5 ways without rounding decisions this calculator doesn't make.
- A 0% tip is valid (no gratuity) and still divides the original bill evenly.
- Tax-inclusive vs pre-tax bill amounts differ by venue; enter whatever number you're actually tipping on.
FAQ
- Custom varies by country. In the US many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; in India service charge may already be included on the bill — check the receipt before adding more.
