Formula

ρ = m ÷ V

Density is mass divided by volume. Water is about 1000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³).

Worked example

1000 kg in 1 m³ is ρ = 1000 kg/m³ — the density of water at room temperature.

Where this can give the wrong answer

  • Volume must be positive.
  • Mixtures need weighted averages or lab measurement — this is pure-substance geometry.
  • Temperature and pressure change density, especially for gases.

FAQ

Many lab tables use cgs units. Divide kg/m³ by 1000 to get g/cm³.
