ρ = m ÷ V
Density is mass divided by volume. Water is about 1000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³).
Worked example
1000 kg in 1 m³ is ρ = 1000 kg/m³ — the density of water at room temperature.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Volume must be positive.
- Mixtures need weighted averages or lab measurement — this is pure-substance geometry.
- Temperature and pressure change density, especially for gases.

- Many lab tables use cgs units. Divide kg/m³ by 1000 to get g/cm³.
