Formula
result = value × (from.toBase ÷ to.toBase)
Litres are the base. US gallons (3.78541 L) and US cups (0.236588 L) are used — not imperial UK gallons, which are about 20% larger.
Worked example
100 litres is about 26.42 US gallons — close to a quarter-tank on a large car, or the size of a typical home water-heater in the US.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- UK imperial gallons are not supported; a British recipe or fuel price in 'gallons' may mean imperial — check the source.
- Millilitres and litres are exact (1000 ml = 1 L); cup conversions are approximate for cooking because 'a cup' varies by country.
- This is liquid volume, not cubic metres of storage — for m³, convert via litres (1000 L = 1 m³) mentally or use a dedicated volume unit if added later.
FAQ
- This calculator uses the US customary cup (236.588 ml). Metric cups (250 ml) and Japanese cups (200 ml) differ — always check which cup the recipe author meant.
