Formula

F = m × a

Force in newtons equals mass in kilograms times acceleration in m/s². One newton accelerates one kilogram at 1 m/s².

Worked example

A 10 kg object at 9.8 m/s² (near Earth gravity) experiences about 98 N of force.

Where this can give the wrong answer

  • Mass must be positive — negative mass is not physical in classical mechanics.
  • This is net force; friction and other forces may need combining separately.
  • Relativistic speeds need special relativity, not this classical formula.

FAQ

Weight is the gravitational force mg near Earth. This calculator takes any acceleration, not only g.
