Formula
volume = L × W × D; tonnes ≈ volume × 1.6 (compacted crushed stone)
Rectangular volume in m³ with optional waste/compaction factor, multiplied by bulk density (~1.6 t/m³ for crushed stone) for weight ordering.
Worked example
A 6 m × 1 m path at 10 cm deep is 0.6 m³. With 5% compaction allowance that's 0.63 m³, or about 1.0 tonne at 1.6 t/m³ — one small truck load or several bulk bags.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Pea gravel and sand are lighter (~1.4–1.5 t/m³) — tonne estimate is conservative for crushed rock.
- Compaction reduces volume after rolling — the waste field covers that if you set it 5–10%.
- Depth is uncompacted lay depth; driveways often need 15–20 cm in layers.
