Formula
bricks = ceil(wall area ÷ ((L + joint) × (H + joint)) × (1 + waste%))
Wall area divided by the effective face area of one brick including mortar joints (converted to metres), plus waste for breakage and cuts.
Worked example
A 5 m × 2.4 m wall (12 m²) with standard 19×9 cm bricks and 10 mm joints needs roughly 570 bricks before 5% waste — about 598 to order.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Openings (doors, windows) must be subtracted from wall area manually.
- Single vs double wythe walls double the count — this is one face only.
- Metric modular bricks differ from imperial sizes — enter actual brick dimensions.
FAQ
- Roughly 25–30 kg dry mortar mix per m² of single-brick wall — use a dedicated mortar calculator for large jobs.
