Formula
g/L = (mass × 1000) ÷ volume(mL)
Mass concentration expresses grams of solute per litre of solution. Percent w/v is grams per 100 mL.
Worked example
5 g in 100 mL is 50 g/L and 5% w/v — common for medical saline-style reporting.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Volume is solution volume after dissolution.
- w/v % differs from w/w % and v/v %.
- Large solute volumes (ethanol) break volume additivity.
FAQ
- g/L is direct for formulas without MM; molarity needs moles for stoichiometry.
