Formula
C₁V₁ = C₂V₂
Moles of solute are conserved when diluting with solvent. Any one unknown can be solved if the other three are known.
Worked example
Dilute 0.1 L of 6 M stock to 0.6 M requires final volume 1 L (add 0.9 L solvent).
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Concentrations and volumes must be in consistent units.
- Mixing volumes are not always perfectly additive for ethanol-water etc.
- Safety: always add acid to water, not reverse.
FAQ
- Pick the unknown — final volume when making a working solution, or stock volume to pipette.
