Formula
M = n ÷ V
Molarity (mol/L) is amount of solute in moles divided by solution volume in litres. Temperature affects volume slightly for precision work.
Worked example
0.5 mol dissolved in 1 L is a 0.5 M solution.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Volume must be total solution volume, not solvent alone.
- Molarity changes with temperature because liquids expand.
- For precise stoichiometry, molality may be preferred in hot/cold labs.
FAQ
- Molality is moles per kg of solvent. Molarity uses litres of solution — common in bench chemistry.
