Formula
v = d ÷ t
Average velocity divides total displacement by elapsed time. For constant motion this equals instantaneous speed; for changing motion it is the mean over the interval.
Worked example
Covering 100 m in 10 s gives v = 10 m/s (36 km/h).
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Time must be greater than zero — dividing by zero is undefined.
- This uses scalar speed along the path; direction (vector velocity) is not tracked.
- Very short times amplify measurement noise in real experiments.
FAQ
- For straight-line motion without direction changes, average velocity magnitude equals average speed. Curved paths can differ.
