Formula
v = f λ
Wave speed equals frequency times wavelength. Default speed is the speed of light for electromagnetic waves in vacuum.
Worked example
Visible green light at 5×10¹⁴ Hz has λ ≈ 600 nm in vacuum.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Frequency and wavelength must both be positive.
- Speed changes in media (n > 1 slows light) — adjust wave speed accordingly.
- Very large or small values display in scientific notation.
FAQ
- Yes. Set wave speed to about 343 m/s in air at 20°C instead of c.
