Formula
τ = r F sin(θ)
Torque about an axis equals lever arm times force times sine of the angle between arm and force. Perpendicular force (90°) gives maximum torque.
Worked example
50 N at 0.3 m and 90° produces τ = 15 N·m.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Angle 0° gives zero torque — force aligned with the arm.
- Sign convention depends on rotation direction; this reports magnitude.
- Static equilibrium problems may need sum of torques = 0.
