Formula

τ = r F sin(θ)

Torque about an axis equals lever arm times force times sine of the angle between arm and force. Perpendicular force (90°) gives maximum torque.

Worked example

50 N at 0.3 m and 90° produces τ = 15 N·m.

Where this can give the wrong answer

  • Angle 0° gives zero torque — force aligned with the arm.
  • Sign convention depends on rotation direction; this reports magnitude.
  • Static equilibrium problems may need sum of torques = 0.

FAQ

N·m (newton-metre) in SI. Do not confuse with joules — same dimensions, different quantity.
