Formula
Tax = Pre-tax amount × Rate; Total = Pre-tax amount + Tax
Sales tax is applied to the pre-tax price (tax-exclusive basis). Enter the listed price before tax and the local rate — the calculator returns the tax component and the out-the-door total.
Worked example
A ₹1,000 pre-tax purchase at 8% sales tax adds ₹80 in tax for a total of ₹1,080. US-style state and local rates vary by jurisdiction — enter the combined rate your receipt would use.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- This always treats the entered amount as pre-tax — there's no inclusive/reverse mode unlike the GST calculator.
- Some US states exempt groceries or clothing below a threshold; the calculator doesn't know your product category.
- Use tax (different from sales tax) and VAT-inclusive pricing aren't modelled here.
FAQ
- Functionally similar for exclusive pricing — both add a percentage to a base amount. The GST calculator also handles inclusive (MRP) extraction and is framed for India's multi-slab GST; this one is a generic pre-tax + rate tool for US-style sales tax.
