Formula
Score % = (total − wrong) × 100 ÷ total
The number correct is the total minus the number wrong; dividing by the total and multiplying by 100 gives the percentage. The table underneath repeats that for every number wrong down to the first failing score — the same grading strip teachers keep beside a stack of papers.
Worked example
Three wrong on a 20-question test is 17 out of 20. 17 × 100 ÷ 20 = 85%, a B on the 10-point scale. Each question is worth 5%, so one more wrong answer would make it 80%.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Tests where questions carry different points need points, not question counts: enter the total points possible and the points lost. Half points are accepted.
- Letter grades follow the 10-point scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60). Schools on a 7-point scale put an A at 93, a B at 85 and a C at 77, so an 84% is a B here and a C there.
- Standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT are scaled and equated, not percentage-scored. This arithmetic does not apply to them.
FAQ
- Read it off the table: it lists every number wrong with its percentage and letter. On a 50-question test each question is worth 2%, so 5 wrong is a 90% and 6 wrong drops to 88%.
