Formula
New GPA = (current GPA × completed credits + this term's quality points) ÷ (completed credits + this term's credits)
Your current GPA times the credits behind it recovers the quality points you have already banked. This term's quality points (grade points × credits, course by course) are added on, and the total is divided by all credits. Because the old credits sit in the denominator, each new term moves the cumulative figure less than the one before.
Worked example
A 3.2 over 45 credits is 144 banked quality points. Five 3-credit courses graded A, A−, B+, A and B add 54 quality points over 15 credits — a 3.60 term. (144 + 54) ÷ 60 = 3.30, so a strong term lifts the cumulative GPA by 0.10.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Your transcript GPA is rounded to two decimals, so the banked quality points are only recovered approximately. Over 90 credits that rounding can shift the result by about 0.01.
- Completed credits must be GPA credits only. Transfer, pass/fail and AP credits often count toward graduation but not toward GPA — using the graduation total will understate how much this term moves you.
- If you retook a course and your school replaces the old grade, the old credits and points should come out of the banked total. This calculator has no way to know that.
FAQ
- Set every row to A and add rows until the result reaches your target. The arithmetic is unforgiving late on: from a 3.2 over 90 credits, a perfect 15-credit term only reaches 3.31.
