Formula
Grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight
Each category's score is multiplied by the share of the course it is worth, the products are added, and the total is divided by the weight graded so far. Dividing by the weights actually entered — not by 100 — is what makes this work mid-term, before the final or a project has a score.
Worked example
Homework 92% at 20%, quizzes 85% at 15%, a midterm of 78% at 25% and a project of 88% at 15% earn 18.4 + 12.75 + 19.5 + 13.2 = 63.85 points out of the 75 graded so far. 63.85 ÷ 75 = 85.13%, a B, with a 25% final still to come.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- A category score must already be that category's average. If homework is ten assignments, average them first (or use total points earned ÷ total points possible) and enter the single figure.
- Courses graded on total points rather than weighted categories don't need weights at all — divide points earned by points possible instead.
- Dropped lowest scores, curves and extra credit are applied by the instructor after this arithmetic. The figure here is the uncurved grade.
- Letter grades use the 10-point scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60). Where a plus or minus begins is set by each syllabus, so none is shown.
FAQ
- Yes. The result is your grade on the 75% that has been graded. The page also shows the points you have banked out of 100, which is what your final course grade builds on.
