Formula
tiles = ceil(room area ÷ tile area × (1 + waste% / 100))
Convert tile length and width from centimetres to metres, multiply for tile area, divide room area by tile area, apply a waste percentage for cuts, and round up.
Worked example
A 12 m² bathroom with 60×60 cm tiles (0.36 m² each) needs about 34 tiles before waste. With 10% waste allowance, order 37 tiles — one box short mid-job is expensive downtime.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Diagonal layouts and niches increase waste beyond 10% — 15% is common for herringbone.
- Tile size includes nominal dimensions; actual sizes vary by manufacturer batch.
- Room area should be net floor — subtract island footprints manually if needed.
