Formula
units = ceil((floor area ÷ coverage per unit) × (1 + waste% / 100))
Divide total floor area by the coverage of one plank, pack, or carton, add waste for cuts and defects, round up to whole units.
Worked example
20 m² of laminate at 2.2 m² per pack needs about 10 packs before waste. With 8% waste, order 11 packs — manufacturers often sell only full cartons.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Enter pack coverage from the box label, not single plank area, when flooring is sold by carton.
- Staggered patterns and hallways increase waste — 10% minimum for L-shaped rooms.
- Underlayment is separate square metres — same as floor area, different product.
