Inputs

This calculator applies to India — the rules behind it are Indian tax/regulatory rules, not just the currency, so it isn't shown in other currencies.

This calculator is for general information only and isn't financial advice. Rates, tax rules, and your actual eligibility depend on your specific situation — check with your bank or a qualified advisor before acting on it.

Formula

Exclusive: GST = Amount × Rate; Total = Amount + GST. Inclusive: Base = Amount / (1 + Rate); GST = Amount − Base

For tax-exclusive prices, GST is added on top. For tax-inclusive prices (MRP-style), the entered amount already contains GST and the calculator backs out the taxable value and tax component separately.

Worked example

₹10,000 exclusive of 18% GST adds ₹1,800 in tax for a total of ₹11,800. Flip to inclusive mode with ₹11,800 and the calculator splits it back to ₹10,000 taxable value plus ₹1,800 GST — the same split a GST invoice must show.

Where this can give the wrong answer

  • CGST+SGST (intra-state) and IGST (inter-state) split isn't shown — only the combined rate matters for the arithmetic.
  • A 0% rate (exempt goods) returns zero GST with the amount unchanged; 28% is the highest standard slab but some sin/luxury items attract cess on top, which isn't modelled.
  • Reverse charge, composition scheme, and TCS/TDS on GST aren't handled — this is a straight forward/inverse percentage calculation.

FAQ

Retail shelf prices in India are usually GST-inclusive (MRP). Select 'Inclusive of GST' when working backwards from an MRP to find the pre-tax value. B2B quotes are often exclusive — add GST on top.
