Formula
per person = (rent + utilities) ÷ roommates
Add monthly rent and shared utility costs, then divide equally by the number of roommates paying in.
Worked example
₹25,000 rent plus ₹3,000 utilities is ₹28,000 total. Split three ways, each roommate pays ₹9,333.33 per month — before anyone argues about who uses the AC most.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Unequal room sizes or ensuite premiums aren't weighted — this is an even split only.
- Utilities of zero is fine if bills are metered separately.
- Roommate count includes you — enter 3 for three people total, not 'two others plus me' as 2.
FAQ
- Assign weights (e.g. large room 1.2×, small 0.8×), multiply rent by each share of total weight, then add equal utility splits. This tool doesn't do weighting automatically.
