What each Weight input means
- Value
- The weight to convert. A body weight, a parcel, a recipe quantity — decimals are fine.
- From
- The unit you have. Grams, kilograms, milligrams and tonnes are metric; pounds, ounces, stone and the US short ton are avoirdupois units, defined from the kilogram — a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg.
- To
- The unit you want. Stone is mostly used for body weight in the UK and Ireland; the US ton is 2,000 lb, the tonne 1,000 kg.
Weight conversion formula
result = value × (kg in one 'from' unit ÷ kg in one 'to' unit) · 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg
The kilogram is the anchor, and the everyday pound is defined from it: exactly 0.45359237 kg. Everything else follows from the pound — an ounce is 1/16 lb, a stone 14 lb, a US (short) ton 2,000 lb. The metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Dividing one unit's kilograms by the other's gives the factor; kilograms to pounds is 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.20462. These are avoirdupois units, the ordinary ones on scales and food labels; troy ounces for precious metals are heavier and not included.
Weight conversion worked example
70 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.32 lb. In the British stones-and-pounds style, 154.32 ÷ 14 = 11.02 stone — 11 st 0.3 lb.
More Weight examples
154 pounds: 154 × 0.45359237 = 69.853225 kg — about 70 kg.
12 stone is 168 lb, and 168 × 0.45359237 = 76.203518 kg.
One US short ton is 0.907185 t — about 10% lighter than a metric tonne.
Where the Weight converter can give the wrong answer
- Ton is ambiguous. The US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18 kg), the metric tonne 1,000 kg, and the British long ton 2,240 lb (1,016.05 kg); this page has the first two.
- Troy ounces (used for gold and silver) are 31.1 g, not the 28.35 g avoirdupois ounce here.
- Strictly these are masses. 'Weight' in physics is a force in newtons, which depends on gravity; on a scale and on a label it means mass.
- Stones-and-pounds: divide pounds by 14 for stone, and multiply the remainder by 14 for pounds.

Weight conversion FAQ
- 2.20462. The pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, and 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.2046.
- 6.35 kg. A stone is 14 lb, and 14 × 0.45359237 = 6.35029 kg.
- 16. An ounce is 28.3495 g, and 16 of them make the 453.592 g pound.
- No. A US ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb. The British long ton is 2,240 lb.
- Divide by 6.35029 for stone, then multiply the decimal part by 14 for the pounds. 70 kg ÷ 6.35029 = 11.023 st, and 0.023 × 14 = 0.3 lb: 11 st 0.3 lb.
- 28.349523125 g exactly — one-sixteenth of a pound — or 28.35 g for most purposes.
- In everyday use, yes: a 'weight' in kg or lb is really a mass. Physics separates them — weight is the force of gravity on a mass, measured in newtons — but scales and recipes use mass units.
- 2,000 in a US (short) ton and 2,204.6 in a metric tonne. The UK long ton, 2,240 lb, is not on this page.
- 1,000, and a kilogram is 1,000,000 mg. Medicine doses are often in mg.
- 35.274 oz: 1,000 g ÷ 28.3495.
- 90.7 kg: 200 × 0.45359237.
- 453.59237 g, exactly.
- 110.2 lb: 50 ÷ 0.45359237.
- 0.0353 oz; an ounce is 28.35 g.
- 31.1035 g, the unit for gold and silver — about 10% heavier than an ordinary ounce. This page uses ordinary (avoirdupois) ounces.
- Fourteen; a stone is 6.35 kg.
