Formula
Ideal (kg) = 50 + 2.3×(height in inches − 60) for men; 45.5 + 2.3×(height in inches − 60) for women
The Devine formula converts height to inches over 5 feet, then adds a sex-specific base weight. The healthy range shown is ±10% around that midpoint.
Worked example
A man 170 cm tall (about 5 ft 7 in) has a Devine ideal weight of roughly 65.9 kg, with a healthy range of about 59.3–72.5 kg.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Devine was derived for medication dosing, not aesthetics — athletes with high muscle mass often weigh above the 'ideal' without being unhealthy.
- Heights below 5 ft (152 cm) produce negative inch-over-5ft terms; the formula still runs but may not match clinical guidance for children or very short adults.
- The ±10% band is a simple symmetric window, not a evidence-based BMI corridor — it's a rough bracket, not a diagnosis.
FAQ
- Devine predates modern BMI cutoffs and uses a single height formula. BMI maps weight to height squared; Devine uses a linear inch model. Both are population averages, not personal targets.
