Formula
km/L = 100 ÷ (L/100 km) · mpg (US) = km/L × 2.352145833…
Fuel economy is reciprocal depending on region. Europe quotes litres per 100 km (lower is better); India and Japan often use km/L; the US uses miles per gallon. Conversions route through km/L with US liquid gallons.
Worked example
15 km/L equals about 35.28 US mpg and 6.67 L/100 km — handy when comparing an Indian brochure figure to a US EPA sticker or European L/100 km rating.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- UK imperial gallons are larger than US gallons — mpg values here are US mpg only.
- L/100 km blows up as km/L approaches zero — very inefficient vehicles show large L/100 km numbers by design.
- Real-world economy varies with driving style; converted numbers match labels, not your commute.
FAQ
- L/100 km measures fuel consumed per fixed distance; km/L and mpg measure distance per fixed fuel. Lower L/100 km is better; higher km/L or mpg is better — always check which format you're reading.
