- Value
- The area to convert: a floor, a plot, a field. If you have length and width, multiply them first in the same unit.
- From
- The unit you have. Square metres, hectares and square kilometres are metric; square feet, square yards, square inches, square miles and acres are US and imperial — an acre is 43,560 square feet.
- To
- The unit you want. Hectares and acres are for land; square feet and square metres for floor space.
Area conversion formula
result = value × (m² in one 'from' unit ÷ m² in one 'to' unit) · area factors are length factors squared
Area units are lengths squared, so their factors are squared too: a foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m², and a square metre is 10.764 sq ft, not 3.28. An acre is 43,560 square feet, a hectare 10,000 m² (a square 100 m on each side), and a square mile 640 acres. The page converts everything through square metres and shows the factor, the working and the area in every unit.
Area conversion worked example
1 acre = 4,046.86 m² ÷ 0.09290304 m² a square foot = 43,560 sq ft. The same acre is 0.405 hectares, and 640 of them make a square mile.

Where the Area converter can give the wrong answer
- Converting a room's length and width separately and then multiplying is fine; converting a length and squaring the factor is the same thing. Converting an area with a length factor is not.
- The acre here uses the international foot. The US survey acre is 4,046.873 m², a difference of 4 parts per million.
- Real-estate measures such as carpet area and built-up area are definitions, not units: convert the number you are given, but don't assume two listings measure the same thing.
