Formula
Wake time = bedtime + fall-asleep buffer + (cycles × 90 min)
Sleep is often described in roughly 90-minute cycles from light sleep through deep and REM stages. Waking between cycles — rather than mid-cycle — can feel less groggy. This calculator adds a short buffer for falling asleep, then stacks whole 90-minute blocks.
Worked example
Lights out at 23:00 with ~15 minutes to fall asleep and five full cycles (7.5 hours of sleep) suggests waking around 06:45 — five complete cycles after sleep onset rather than an arbitrary 8-hour block.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Cycle length varies by person and night — 90 minutes is an average, not a metronome.
- Alcohol, stress, and screen time shift sleep architecture; the math won't capture fragmented sleep.
- Five cycles (7.5 h) may be short for some adults; six cycles (9 h) suits heavier training loads or catch-up sleep.
FAQ
- Most people aren't asleep the instant their head hits the pillow. The buffer approximates sleep latency so wake times align with actual sleep onset, not just time in bed.
