Inputs

This calculator applies to India — the rules behind it are Indian tax/regulatory rules, not just the currency, so it isn't shown in other currencies.

Formula

Tax = sum of slab rates on progressive bands (₹0–3L, 3–6L, 6–9L, 9–12L, 12–15L, 15L+)

Gross annual income is taxed in slabs at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 30% under the simplified new regime model for FY 2026-27. Each slab applies only to income within that band, not the entire income.

Worked example

A ₹12,00,000 gross income under the simplified new-regime slabs produces an estimated tax of ₹90,000 — an effective rate of 7.5% and take-home of about ₹11.1 lakh before cess. The jump to 20% applies only on income above ₹12 lakh, so someone at exactly ₹12 lakh pays less than you might guess from the top slab alone.

Where this can give the wrong answer

  • Health and education cess (4% on tax) isn't added — actual liability is slightly higher than the headline tax figure.
  • Old-regime deductions (80C, 80D, HRA exemption) aren't supported — this models new-regime slabs only.
  • Surcharge for income above ₹50 lakh and rebate under Section 87A aren't included, so high earners and very low earners may see different results from official calculators.

FAQ

New regime only, with the simplified slab structure noted for FY 2026-27. If you claim heavy 80C/80D/HRA deductions, the old regime may yield lower tax — this calculator won't show that comparison.
