result = value × (from.toBase ÷ to.toBase) with second as base
Duration converts through seconds. Minutes and hours are exact; days use 86,400 s; weeks 604,800 s; years use the Julian average 31,557,600 s (365.25 days) for long-span estimates.
Worked example
60 minutes equals 1 hour exactly — the same conversion behind meeting lengths, payroll hours, and cooking timers switched between min and hr.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Calendar months aren't included because month length varies — use days or weeks for rough spans, or date tools for calendar arithmetic.
- The 'year' unit is 365.25 days, not calendar 365 or 366 — fine for averages, wrong for 'exactly one calendar year from today'.
- Leap seconds aren't applied — this is civil-time duration math, not astronomical UT1.
