Formula

Take-home = gross − pre-tax deductions − federal income tax − Social Security (6.2%) − Medicare (1.45%) − New York income tax − NY Paid Family Leave

Pre-tax deductions come off first. Federal income tax is worked out on what is left after the $16,100 standard deduction for a single filer, using the 2026 brackets, then divided by your pay periods. Social Security takes 6.2% up to $184,500 of pay and Medicare 1.45% of all of it. New York then applies 9 brackets from 3.9% to 10.9% after a $8,000 standard deduction. New York also deducts NY Paid Family Leave.

Worked example

On $60,000 a year paid twice a month, each $2,500 paycheck loses $209.17 to federal income tax, $155.00 to Social Security and $36.25 to Medicare, $110.13 to New York and $10.80 to NY Paid Family Leave. That leaves $1,978.66 to take home, or $47,488 over the year — 79.15% of gross pay.

Where this can give the wrong answer

  • New York City and Yonkers levy their own income tax on residents — roughly 3% to 3.9% in the city. It is withheld alongside the state tax and is not included here, so a New York City payslip deducts substantially more than this page shows.
  • New York's figures are its 2026 rates, brackets and standard deduction. Credits for dependants, childcare, earned income and the like can reduce the bill further and are not applied.
  • New York deducts NY Paid Family Leave at 0.43%, which is included above and is separate from income tax.
  • This works out the year's tax and divides it by your pay periods. Your employer instead uses the IRS withholding tables and whatever is on your Form W-4, so a real payslip is usually within a few dollars of this rather than identical to it.
  • It assumes the same gross pay every period. Overtime, bonuses and commission are taxed when they are paid — a bonus is often withheld at a flat supplemental rate — so an irregular month will not match.
  • Social Security stops once you have earned $184,500 in 2026. Above that, later paychecks in the year are larger than the average shown here.
  • Only pre-tax deductions are modelled. Roth 401(k) contributions, union dues, garnishments and post-tax insurance all come out after tax and are not included.

FAQ

On $60,000 a year, 20.85% of gross pay goes to taxes and payroll deductions in New York, leaving $47,488. The share rises with income, because federal tax is graduated and New York's is too.
