Formula
Value = the sum of each letter's number under the chosen cipher
Gematria assigns a number to every letter and adds them up. The ciphers differ only in which number each letter gets: Ordinal counts A to Z as 1 to 26, Reduction folds those to a single digit, Reverse Ordinal counts backwards, Sumerian multiplies Ordinal by six, and the Agrippa cipher runs 1–9, then 10–90, then 100–800. Every one is a fixed substitution you can check by hand.
Worked example
CALCULATE in the Ordinal cipher is C3 + A1 + L12 + C3 + U21 + L12 + A1 + T20 + E5 = 78. The same word is 24 in Reduction, 165 in Reverse Ordinal, 468 in Sumerian (78 × 6) and 573 under Agrippa.
Where this can give the wrong answer
- Only the letters A to Z count. Spaces, digits and punctuation are skipped, so 'Cal cu-late 123' gives the same number as 'calculate'.
- There is no single correct cipher. Different systems give different numbers for the same word, and all five are shown together so it is obvious how much the choice decides.
- Hebrew and Greek gematria use their own alphabets and are not covered here; this handles English letters only.
- Any two words can be made to match by picking the right cipher out of several. That is a property of the arithmetic, not evidence of a connection between them.
FAQ
- None of them. Ordinal is the most commonly used in English gematria, but the ciphers are conventions people invented, not discoveries. The table shows all five so you can see the same word take five different values.
