What each Business Days input means
- Start date
- The first day of the period. It counts if it is a weekday.
- End date
- The last day of the period, also counted if it is a weekday.
- Holidays
- Weekends only, or weekends plus the eleven US federal holidays on the days they are observed. State and company holidays are not included.

Every day from the start to the end date, both included, is checked: Monday to Friday counts, Saturday and Sunday do not. Choose the US option and the eleven federal holidays are taken out too — New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas — on the day they are observed. When a holiday falls on a Saturday it is observed the Friday before, and on a Sunday the Monday after, so New Year's Day 2028, a Saturday, is observed on 31 December 2027. The page lists the holidays it skipped.
Business Days worked example
2026 has 365 days and starts on a Thursday, so it has 52 full weeks plus one extra weekday: 261 weekdays. Taking out the eleven federal holidays — with Independence Day, a Saturday, observed on Friday 3 July — leaves 250 business days.
More Business Days examples
November 2026 has 30 days, 9 of them at weekends, and two federal holidays — Veterans Day on Wednesday the 11th and Thanksgiving on Thursday the 26th — leaving 19 business days.
Monday 5 to Friday 16 October 2026: 12 calendar days, both ends included, less one weekend, is 10 business days — two full working weeks.
Where the Business Days calculator can give the wrong answer
- Both the start and end dates count when they are weekdays, so Monday to the next Monday is 6 business days.
- Only federal holidays are skipped. State holidays, bank holidays outside the federal list and company days off still count.
- A holiday on a Saturday moves to Friday for federal employees; many private employers follow it, some do not.
- If the end is before the start, the dates are swapped and noted.

- The US legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, each on its observed day.
- Yes, both, when they are weekdays. From Monday 24 to Friday 28 August 2026 is 5 business days.
- A Saturday holiday is observed the Friday before and a Sunday holiday the Monday after, per OPM. The page skips the observed day.
- Between 20 and 23 weekdays before holidays. February in a common year has exactly 20; a 30-day month has 20 to 22 and a 31-day month 21 to 23, depending on which weekday it starts on.
- 261 weekdays, and 249 after US federal holidays: twelve fall on weekdays in 2027, because New Year's Day 2028, a Saturday, is observed on Friday 31 December 2027.
- Not on the federal calendar. Juneteenth National Independence Day, 19 June, became a federal holiday in 2021, and the US option skips it — on Friday 18 June in 2027, when the 19th is a Saturday.
- Subtract it from the total yourself: the page skips weekends and, if you choose, federal holidays, but cannot know other days off.
